Zorro may wear a mask, but there's no disguising the fact that this is an absolutely splendid swashbuckler. Anthony Hopkins plays the original righter of wrongs who hands over his rapier, and his mission, to a younger man, Antonio Banderas, while Catherine Zeta-Jones, as the fiery heroine, proves she's a match for the men in the action sequences. Director Martin Campbell (following on from the success of blockbuster Bond movie GoldenEye) makes the most of the dramatic swordplay and paces the film perfectly to its explosive conclusion.
"...A wealth of charismatic Zorros, a smashing heroine and a dauntless love of adventure....[Hopkins acts] with unexpectedly elegant panache....Ms. Zeta-Jones makes her first major film role one to remember..."
Antonio Banderos in his finest role since El Mariachi{ and hopefully he can keep it up for Puss-In-Boots}
he plays Alejandro who is a young bandit who wants revenge for the murder of his brother at the hands of the evil Captain Love{ironic name considering his cruelty} and he is the prodigee to become Zorro. his mentor, the original Zorro: Don Diego De La Vega{Anthony Hopkins} teaches him all he needs to know to follow in his footsteps. i won't ruin too much. but some cool twists and turns along the way. moving at times. wonderful swashbuckler. also stars Catharine Zeta Jones as Elena and her father figure Don Rafael Montero.
Every now and again, it's great to sit down and watch a film that doesn't stretch the ol' grey matter and you can just enjoy the rollercoaster of events.
The Mask of Zorro fits the bill beautifully. Good acting all round and some splendid swordplay.
Producers of the James Bond films are said to be in talks with director Martin Campbell to help get the franchise back on track. Campbell was at the helm for Pierce Brosnan's first outing as the super-suave spy in the 1995 hit Goldeneye. Bond had been away for six years when Goldeneye was released and Campbell is widely credited with overseeing a successful comeback. With the public debate over who will play 007 in his 21st outing still raging, the producers are keen to push ahead with plans... Read more
