Thiis is a solid, entertaining saga about a family of mill owners somewhere north of Watford during the last part of the nineteenth century and the first part of the twentieth.

Stephen Murray and David Tomlinson are effective as the nasty side of the family, Dennis Price and Jimmy Hanley less so as the good, but then the parts aren't quite as meaty. Dennis Price's accent, though, is a thing of wonder, bouncing between Kensington received pronunciation and cod Yorkshire - 'thet men oop t' cloob' . Tomlinson, wisely, doesn't attempt it. The whole thing is competently filmed and very enjoyable
