Creating a sequel to the superlative sci-fi action blockbuster The Matrix was always going to be a Herculean task. The Wachowski brothers set themselves such a high standard to compete with, that the second chapter in their epic man-versus-machines trilogy was never likely to match the impact of the first. To their credit, the duo do succeed in equalling the original's awe factor here, adding a handful of fantastic — though underused — new villains and delivering an array of astonishing set pieces, as Neo (Keanu Reeves) and his associates fight to save Zion, Earth's last human enclave. Disappointingly, however, such elements fail to lift a film that suffers from stilted dialogue, cheesy scripting and a surprisingly plodding pace. Had the Wachowskis centred their storyline within the “anything's possible” world of the Matrix, as opposed to the drab and inactive confines of “reality”, they would have struck gold again. Instead, they produced a mediocre stopgap until the final instalment, The Matrix Revolutions.

Now that our hero Neo can fly like Superman, this second instalment comes closer to other comic-book blockbusters: its set pieces may be bigger and better than anything done before, but they still remain action movie staples Ð car chases and fights on mov

    Great effects, dodgy plot

The original Matrix had great effects and the plot developed the central idea throughout the film.

In this one, the central idea is still there, doesn't get developed at all, so most of the originality is missing. Instead the plot centres around a load of mystic nonsense, simply proving a platform for a load of stunning effects.

    A terrible film

This is a truly dreadful film, and I resent the 3 hours wasted in the cinema watching it. "Here we go again" says Morpheus in the trailer, but it wasn't long before my mind was filling in the "again". He truly is a pompous windbag, a dogmatic fanatic, and his speeches are truly leaden. The film is full of long, pointless scene like the "rave in the cave" - probably only 10 minutes but it seemed much longer, of footage of people dancing in a cave. Why?? The whole power station scene was *obviously* added in purely to make it easy to merchandise a video game. Even the fight scenes are boring, going on as long as they do. In Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, the fights reflect the dynamic between the characters, but in Matrix Reloaded, they are mere exercises in cramming in as many effects as possible. We *know* that Neo has really good kung-fu, can we *please* have some story now? Not only that, but Neo is indestructible, can fly and can ressurect the dead - it's extremely hard to care about a character who *cannot fail*.

The first Matrix was a classic - but after seeing the second, I've no desire at all to see the third.

is it a bird? no,just a computer game

I had mixed feelings when i first saw this at the movies until i got it on dvd.

all the matrix films have one problem, (which is unfortunate} when being reviewed.they move to fast for one cinema viewing.

these movies are ultimate viewing for ultimate media....DVD.

only after multiple plays will anyone come close to either getting the plot or truly appreciating the raw power and pulse racing energy that is so present in the action/effects sequences.

Although a lot of the script may seem techno babblish, the fact is it is quite innovative.

you cannot fault the SFX (and believe me i have tried} or the pounding soundtrack which just enhances the sequences they are scored with.

if you like to leave reality behind for a couple of hours then its a must see.

if you lack imagination then try a fifties western.

Well no one can fault the film for the special effects... they were absolutely amazing. But as for story ...the makers have decided to cash in...by making a trilogy ..when really it should have only been a sequel. <br><br>It seemed to me they just squashed in the plot continuation right at the end. Hopefully the third in the series will concentrate more on plot and story than dazzling us with just a barrage of special effects.

The worst sort of pap - pretentious, devoid of any original ideas, expensive waste of celluloid.

If you want good pap, try something like "Cinema Paradiso": comforting, yeasty and milkwarm and that actually saves some celluloid!

    Poop

Complete & Utter drivel.. this is one of the worst films I have ever seen. The first Matrix film was an original concept, but ruined by the follow up.

    OH YES!!

Lock and load for some serious entertainment - it might not be as fresh, original or daring as the first film - few sequels ever are - but that hardly matters. What "Reloaded" does best is entertain, literally whipping up a frenzy of violent action induced excitement that is absolutely euphoric.

In fact watching "Reloaded" is like some new kind of drug - you might not be sure about it to start with, you may not even like it at first, but before long you really wont want to live without it… Some people didn't like it but as Morpheus would reply, 'My beliefs do not require them to.' Nice.

The worst part of the trilogy.

I remember seeing this film at the cinema, it was such a let down. After all the hype and the fact that it was the sequel to one of the greatest films of all time I couldn't have been more dissapointed when leaving. I decided recently to give the film another chance after finally plucking up the courage to rent Matrix Revolutions (which, although not as good as the original Matrix, was no where near as bad as I had feared). Reloaded however, was and still is a train wreck of a movie. The action sequences in this film will send you to sleep if you're not careful (bar one - the excellent freeway sequence) and seeing as the film pretty much hinges on these sequences, this is not good at all. It just seems like the Wachowski brothers used all their good ideas in the first film. Reloaded is to the Matrix what Phantom Menace was to Star Wars. The acting is bad, the script is truly awful, often descending into meaningless drivel (see the scene where neo finally meets 'The Architect') and so much of the action is quite clearly CG and totally unbelievable. The only redeeming feature of this film, and what scrapes it two stars is the fact that it is part of a pretty good trilogy and without it the far better Revolutions doesn't make any sense at all.

    The law of diminishing returns

Like a lot of sequels this doesn't really come close to the originality, wit and excitement of the first film. The problem is that the Wachowski's have taken the weakest aspects of the original and expanded them while forgetting about the intelligence and humour that made it work in the first place. So we get more portentuous dialogue and increasingly drawn out fight scenes, and many of the same camera shots repeated ad infinitum. It makes for fewer thrills rather than more.

Also, this simply doesn't work as a stand alone film, so viewers not clued up (there may be someone out there) won't have a clue what's going on, and this ends with a 'To Be Concluded' message, hardly making for a satsfying viewing experience.

One of the greatest films ever made.

Matrix Reloaded is a giant of a movie.

Even rated as just an action movie I'd put it above Terminator 2 and Aliens.

And there's alot of fascinating stuff going on with the psychology/mythology of mankind, I think people will be pondering over this movie for decades to come.

Very good but not as good as The Matrix

This is second part of the Matrix trilogy. The first film, the Matrix, is truly amazing and I believe it is one of the best films ever made. Matrix Reloaded lacks some of the style and darkness of the first film. Some of the action scenes were so unbelievable it spoiled my enjoyment of the film. Overall it is still a very good film with a brilliant plot, special effects and action scenes. It is just not a good as the first film, which was a true masterpiece. I gave it 8/10.
