I rented this not knowing what it was about at all but I love period drama and Ciaran Hinds so that decided it! Throughly enjoyable, the plot is extremely good (thanks to Thomas Hardy of course) and is almost played out scene for scene with the original book. All performances excellent (esp Ciaran Hinds) and it really captures the feel of the times.

I would definitely recommend it to all!

  • Brilliant and moving story of how mistakes can come back to haunt you years later

A lengthy but excellent dramatisation of a classic Thomas Hardy novel that I confess I had never read. Ciaran Hinds is excellent as a man who, after one stupid, drunken mistake that alters the course of his life and the lives of others, then tries to make amends years later. However, his good intentions are sometimes misguided, leading to further heartache for himself and those close to him. It is such a good story, and I can't imagine it being told better than by the actors in this film. The final words spoken are so moving, they stay with you for some time afterwards because you have really got to know the man and seen the good and the bad in him during the course of the story. Excellent.

  • Yet again Thomas Hardy scores

Whilst this version doesnt come anywhere near the Allan Bates film in terms of acting and writing..( that screenplay was by the one and only Dennis Potter)..it does score on the actual filming which was breathtaking in parts...you realy felt you were in Hardys Wessex.

Hats of also to a great performance by Juliet Aubrey who is one our finest actresses and was simply mesmerising in Middlemarch...so i would say to you watch the BBC Allan Bates version as well...and of course read all of the Thomas Hardy novels..you will be transfixed!!.

I was only able to watch Part 1 of this film as Part 2 would not work ! What a wasted evening that was.
