The Mean Season

THE MEAN SEASON, based on a novel by John Katzenbach, tells the riveting story of disgruntled Miami newspaper reporter Malcolm Anderson (Kurt Russell), who decides to quit the news game after tiring of writing about murder. But before he leaves, he finds himself in the middle of the biggest story of his life when a serial killer decides to contact him. Apparently impressed by the journalist's prose style, the so-called Numbers Killer wants to use the media to promote his deadly activities and finds Anderson the perfect mouthpiece. Meanwhile, the notoriety feeds Anderson's own ego and ambition as well, and he heedlessly plunges ahead with his work--until the danger comes too close to home. THE MEAN SEASON features a terrific cast led by Russell, Andy Garcia, Joe Pantoliano, and Mariel Hemingway.

This is a cracker of a thriller for most of its length, marred only by some seriously duff moments, most notably supplied by poor old Mariel Hemingway, who is saddled with the weak “girlfriend under threat from a psychopath” role. Kurt Russell, playing her cynical journalist boyfriend, gives a mesmerising performance of great strength and depth as a man who finds himself dragged further into his latest crime story than is comfortable for kith and kin. Overall, this is a taut, atmospheric and potentially distressing movie, with the odd dull spell.

B Movie Thriller with good cast

Kurt Russell plays a disruntled journalist who wants to leave town until a serial killer uses him to write about his murders.

A strong supporting cast - Andy garcia, Joe Pantaliano, Marial Hemmingway have little to do. Niether the characters nor the plot hold little interest as the film chugs to a predictable conclusion. if you want to see Marial Hemmingway naked rent 'Star 80' and only put this on your selection list if it's really really low.
