LOVEFiLM Review The Messenger

  • 4 stars out of 5

A film about delivering the message of bereavement is at times uncomfortable viewing, but the performances and direction result in something special.

Very good performances from the cast. It is a different genre of war film and I really enjoyed it. It's atmospheric and realistic and heart warming. Shame it did not get more recognition as it deserved it.

Would probably make a neat play, nice little character piece framed on a flimsy and, at times, unnecessary story framework.

  • A well acted drama

This is a War drama film with a difference Ben Foster plays a war hero sergeant returned from duties in Iraq. He is given an assignment with the unenveable job off informing next of kin of the death of their son or daughter in battle. He is partnered by Woody Harrelson and the two play their roles enthusiastically. A film with emotion, but with an ending that was rather flat, and given the content could have

    been made more of.

However I did enjoy it , and as a war drama found it refreshing not to have to view scenes of war brutality .

Well where do I start? Probably the most boring lacklustre film I've nearly watched in a long time. The story is-a team that announces the demise of loved ones to their families-in America-I would say the subject matter is irrelevant to me as a Brit. We don't have the same ethos as the Yanks, they're all wailing and shouting OMG-ish reactions and God Bless America attitude,Soldier!! once you've seen one announcement -you've basically seen 'em all. A lot of stereaotypes here, single young pregnant MOM, poor Black family losing son they're Sooooo proud of. I found it patronising and predictable in a pathetically outdated manner. Also-who the heck's interested in Woody Harrelson's butt? his sex life was a very very poor backgroiund story-done to death and just annoying frankly. We stopped the film after 40 minutes bored to tears.

  • character study rather than a story

Good performaces... but, while the slow building character development is good, and very different from most films about soldiers, it is perhaps too slow - the film is virtually plotless. Classy acting, but a little bit more story would have enhanced the performaces further IMHO.

Started off really promising then found it very slow, not much happened really?! And a pitiful ending. Such a shame was really looking forward to watching this.
