I am very familiar with the Aust. Opera G&S productions, with their Pinafore and Patience with Dennis Olsen being superb. (As I recall, Never Mind the Why and Wherefore got 6 encores, and each time, the choreography and 'business' changed and kept bringing the house down.) Joyous shows. And then there is this lead balloon. The 'updated' aspects are at total odds with the lyrics -...'We are gentlemen of Japan on many a glass and jar/screen and fan' and they stand in front of the curtain, dressed in suits, umbrellas and briefcases, handing on to subway car cords. Static, unintersting, lacking colour and movement to get the show off the ground. The maids from school are from St. Trinians, hitting each other with hockey sticks and slingshots which just doesn't work. The choreography is absurd of the totally-boring type. The production lacks sparkle, colour, joy, and part of the reason for the latter is that there is no character interplay - they stand, sing, and pipe up at the right times but don't 'play' the dialogue and lyrics off each other. Perhaps you might be more interested in the observation of the other reviewer and buy it for the soundtrack rather than actual viewing!
