A Pilgrimage Through Time
By SiAng from Lincolnshire , 14 Sep 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
Unlike the other reviewers, we really did enjoy this film. It was imaginative and striking, following two pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. En route they encounter many strange people (or perhaps apparitions?) and they seem to step out of time on their journey - at one moment being next to a roaring motorway, the next back in history. Their future is foretold and they catch words of wisdom in the most unlikely places as they search - both implicitly and explicitly - for God.
But there are a couple of things to warn the potential viewer about. The film draws heavily on Church history. The pair's encounters are with various heresies against Catholicism (e.g. those who believe that God cannot be both 3 and 1 simultaneously, those who believe Jesus could not be both man and God etc). This subject matter, and some of the Biblical symbolism can be confusing at times, but - in our opinion - the film is worth watching precisely because it engages with such subject matter in such an imaginative way.
Will the wiles of the devil lure our heroes from their way? Give it a try and become a pilgrim through time for 90 minutes!- Was this review helpful to you?

(9)Intellectual and witty - beautiful surrealism
By Fremsley (3 reviews) , 01 Sep 2011Thoroughly enjoyed following the convoluted path through catholic dogma. A wry sense of humour and keen pace keeps the film from ever becoming too po-faced.
Afterwards it's worth watching the accompanying short documentary, 'Luis Bunuel, an atheist by God's grace', which is a warm appreciation of the film's creation and provides an interesting perspective of Bunuel's views on religion.- Was this review helpful to you?

Bit of a puzzle for the non-catholics
By Zamy (552 reviews) from London , 30 May 2006If anti-clericism is perhaps Bunuel's only overemphasis this is still an impressive film. Using only direct liturgical references Bunuel traces the path of two pilgrims from France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain and their various strange adventures along the way. Although I was unable to connect with most of the references Bunuel's usual mix of dreams, surrealism and uncanny human observation still weaves a potent spell. Not a film to suit all tastes perhaps. Still well worth watching if not one of the very best of Bunuel's great films.- Was this review helpful to you?

Nothing to do with Harold Lloyd
By a customer from Manchester , 09 Feb 2006A series of parables, religious visions(may be hallucinations)linked by two tramps making a pilgrimage through France to Santiago in Spain.Strange but very enjoyable.
Not to be confused with a film starring Harold Lloyd with the same title.- Was this review helpful to you?

Prostitutes, misguided acts of god, a very amiable Satan, the men in white coats. It's all there.
By a customer from Nottingham , 07 Jan 2006It's mostly a dialectic about religion, but from a director who famously cried 'thank God I'm an atheist!' The cinematography is some of the best I've seen from Bunuel. It's also very very funny, depending on your sense of humour. 2 trampy sorts are on a pilgrimage, one believes in God, one doesn't and... Well, just watch it, you'll either like it or you won't. But remember, it's not pretentious, it's surrealist - you shouldn't take it so seriously.- Was this review helpful to you?
