'The Miracle of Bern' is one of the greatest box-office hits in German cinema history. It tells several stories at once: how the 1954 World Cup is won against all odds; how some semblance of national self-confidence is restored after the disastrous Hitler years; and how football helps to overcome the estrangement between a boy and his father, who has just returned from years of imprisonment in Russia. Given that most post-war German cinema either tried to destroy the nationalist myth-making of the pre-1945 years or didn't mention the war at all, 'Miracle's' portrayal of the 1954 victory points to a generational change both in German cinema and in German society at large. Highly recommended viewing for anyone who wants to get beyond the 'two world wars and one world cup' stereotypes.

Quite enjoyable bit of history about Germany as the underdog on the pitch and after the war. Obviously the story centres around the 1954 World Cup but about a family and how the aftermath of war affected them at the time. This is not a film for people unlike me, that don't like subtitles and Germany.

  • Another winner from Germany

Quite a heart-warming little film from Germany set against the background of West Germany's World Cup victory over hot favourites Hungary in 1954.

German film-makers have never been afraid to deal with difficult subjects pertaining to the aftermath of World War II and this deals with German POWs returning home to their families from Soviet Prison Camps ten years after the war has ended.

You don't have to be a football fan to enjoy this movie which is told from the viewpoint of a 12-year-old boy who has to get to know his former Prisoner-of-War father who returns home and disrupts the life he has always known.

The Germans do make some good films on relatively low budgets.

  • Sentimental and Patriotic

Obviously intended as a 50th year celebration of Germany's world cup win in 1954, this film came over as a very patriotic and sentimentally comic style form of story telling. Recently there have been rumours that the team were on performance improving stimulants, but this has yet to be proved. The football on show was very slick, but included showboating tricks which would have been unseen in those days.

Based on the aftermath of a world war that has brought Germany to its knees. Doesnt mask the countries situation but focuses on anti-nazis and their struggle to return to a normal life. Fell good German film, can understand how this is very popular in its home country.
