cannot understand why this film only has 2. 5 stars from members, i thought it was an extremely good film, vincent cassel again very impressive as an actor, the story itself is very good and gripping, watch it with an open mind, its quite a dark storyline but pay attention to what is happening and be sure to read the subtitles and you will get the meaning of the movie, thanks for taking the time to read my review, enjoy the movie if you rent it.

Perhaps this film is more suitable for 'mature' viewers (not about biological age). It's visually stunning and captivating. Two major criticisms are the power of the dark force is not convincing/irresistible enough; too much of a rush towards the end of the story climax. I would have normally given this film 3. 5-4 stars; surely it deserves more than just 2. 5 stars, so gives it 5 stars here to balance out the rating.

  • Quite Boring French Movie.

Considering this film is made in French and is clearly obvious by casting Vincent Cassell n unknown actors/actresses, The Monk isn't a great movie at all. For starters it begins very slowly about a young man who is highly praised and poplaur around people only to discover a mysterious person that may or may not be the devil leading him into temptations that are beyond reedemable. The acting was pretty poor, there were several sub plots that were boring or didn't care less about and the book seemed more interesting that the film itself. Be advised that it's not far better than the Woman In Black (that's a great movie btw) n plus this film is in french too.

  • Film at its best.

This film is exquisite. It helps a lot if you have some awareness of, and empathy with, the History of the Christian Church and European Thought generally, otherwise it will just become something from the Thriller/Horror bin. The theme of Chastity might be a bit of a laugh to many in our privileged, fun-loving society,in which case I suggest you stay with 'Carry on up the Vatican.' If Religion worries you, see it as an allegory about the Evil that waits all around, ready to lead us away from the Best in our lives. Cessel masterly, the whole thing visually superb.

The novel this film is based upon is so epic and shaped the Gothic movement that it's a shame it was so short. Visually it was superb, and it covered all the main points but it was lacking in depth of content.
