    [Highly rated reviewer]

The Monocled Mutineer has finally reached DVD after a wait of over 20 years. It is a fine ensemble piece with excellent performances by all the cast members. Paul McGann is perfect as the young hero/villain and he is well supported all round including Dave Hill of Eastenders fame. Particularly strong are the World War 1 scenes where the futility of the action at the front is counterbalanced by the overwhelming patriotism of those back at home who do not yet fully realise the horror and suffering of their loved ones seemingly so far away. This DVD is highly recommended.

  • Magnificent Mini-series

This quartet of the true story of con artist Percy Topliss was one of the best pieces of work ever produced by the BBC.

I can only think that the contraversial nature of the plot has left this gem in a quiet place away from the public's gaze.

If you enjoy biographical tales of a questionable nature, especially about the horror of the First World War then you really should watch this collection.

The Monocled Mutineer is a brilliant drama / comedy mini-series, recounting the true story of rogue British soldier Percy Topliss (Paul McGann), starting at the end, and retelling all the events that lead up to the present. It tells of Percy's humble beginnings and up to the age of how he has many encounters with the law. And is perceived by people at the time to have redeemed himself by serving God, King and Country in the Great War.

The story also represents how people if treated badly will react negatively, and lash back. It also shows the terrible effects of war, and how it affected the poor men, and their lives in the trenches, and it makes you totally understand and support their uprising in the officer training camp.

This film is brilliantly directed by Jim O'Brien, it tells a brutally honest story, and holds no punches in portraying the bloody trenches of WWI. It shows the terror that those men faced and does not apologise. It is based on a great script by Alan Bleasdale, who tells a wonderful story with good characters, and as a recurring theme, explores the lives of working class people, representing their hardship, and how they went about their lives. The series has a great performance by Paul McGann, and fans of the film Excalibur may recognise Cherie Lunghi, as Percy Topliss' lover.

The story is tragic, yet the theme song is quite upbeat, I guess it is a juxtaposition. I would recommend this series greatly. It is a good mixture of comedy and drama and is another fine example of the BBC's brilliant programming.

You wouldn't want to meet Percy Topliss but this is a great story. One man beats WWI, life in the army and the odds that life gives him. He keeps getting the breaks, and the girls until it all catches up with him...

Great acting, great music and a great way to spend a few hours.

If you want cheap thrills and instant gratification, watch Transformers. If you're an adult, watch this.

Watched about half an hour of it - couldn't get into it at all - seemed to be a very biased production - so I cancelled the other discs from my rental list.
