Why, Why, Why?
By Mike Nightingale from Cardiff , 05 May 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
I attended a preview screening of this film and it?s the only film preview I've ever been to where more than half the audience walked out.
The ?story,? such as it is, concerns a bereaved grandmother who moves in with her daughter?s family and the complications which arise from her affair with a young feckless builder, who is also her other daughter?s lover! There is a lot of very explicit material, but who this might appeal to I can?t imagine.
The quality of the production is what you?d expect from a BBC 2 ?gritty? drama and the acting can?t be faulted, it?s the script that is the problem. If there was some sort of national scandal where a large percentage of grannies were in the habit of stealing their daughters boyfriends perhaps there would be a reason why this was made ? if there is such a trend, I?m blissfully unaware of it!
During the film there were many unintended laughs and even more groans from the audience - even after they thinned out. I have always had a policy of seeing a film through but this film came closest to making me leave before the end. See it at your own risk!- Was this review helpful to you?

(67)Fails to excite
By Sleat (77 reviews) , 09 Jan 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
'Breaking taboos', 'Controversial'...Yes, something edgy and exciting is flagged up. Watch it though, and it just flags.
Anne Reid gives a superb, restrained performance and pushes some personal boundaries and the director adds some fine subtle touches and a nice balance of complexities.
The storyline is sharp on paper. Instead of sibling rivalry over the same love interest, here it's daughter and bereaved mother who are infuatuated with the same man, who's no good for either of them. (Who can blame them when it's Daniel Craig). All the elements of something great are there, and yet it just drags, seeming longer than it is. To be totally honest, the highlight for me was a brief rear-view shot of a naked Daniel Craig. One gratuitous second out of an apparently intelligent film!?
I don't really get what the problem is, but I'm pretty sure it's the film's and not mine.- Was this review helpful to you?

By a customer , 11 Oct 2011I am not a prude and i wasnt shocked by this film, just bored as it had no real story, nothing happened and because of the other reviews i expected more. i would waste your time if you are considering it as so many other films are more entertaining!- Was this review helpful to you?

Give it a watch if you've got nothing better to do
By littlestarleics (11 reviews) from Leicester , 30 Aug 2011This was ok - it didn't shock in any way but made me cringe in parts! Seeing any older lady have it off with anybody, whatever their age isn't that great to watch! Film was quite slow paced and fairly predictable. However if it interests you give it a go, it's not that bad!- Was this review helpful to you?

Why is everyone so shocked?
By v0lterra (10 reviews) from Reading , 27 Jun 2011Reading many of the other reviews, many people seem to find it shocking that an older woman might be interested in sex. They seem to have translated this shock into bad reviews, for what most have described as a well acted film. That in itself seems to justify the film to me and make it more worthwhile than yet another film about beautiful twenty-somethings following their natural instincts.- Was this review helpful to you?
