Anyone expecting a high-octane version of the sparkling 1973 swashbuckler The Three Musketeers will be sorely disappointed with this insipid action adventure by The Relic director Peter Hyams. Falling flat from the clumsy opening titles, it fails entirely in its aim to update Alexandre Dumas's classic by adding Matrix-style fight choreography. Not only are the confrontation sequences between Justin Chambers's vengeful musketeer D'Artagnan and Cardinal Richelieu's henchman Tim Roth uninspired and tension free, they're also snigger-inducing with their obvious speeded-up camerawork. But even that's not as funny as the ludicrous collection of mullet haircuts, beards and inconsistent accents that add an extra air of farce to a movie crammed with hammy dialogue and wooden performances. What acting sophisticate Catherine Deneuve is doing in this mess is anybody's guess.

  • Dire version of the familiar story, with a dull hero, unspeakable dialogue, overblown supporting performances and Hong Kong-styled martial arts to sabotage any sense of period.

    Don't waste your time

Not worth watching. I thought it might be of similar quality as the Count of monte christo that was recently made but this is really dull. Your better with the earlier musketeer films with Oliver Reid in them.

    Special effects?

I really enjoyed this film - but for all the wrong reasons! Bless 'em they tried so hard but the martial arts swashbuckling was more reminiscent of Xena, and as for the rain effect - it is the worst I have ever seen.

More comedic than they intended I think.
