Kinda sad, inspiring and sometimes just funny
By a customer from Hertfordshire , 15 Jul 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
I didn't know much about Quinten Crisp before, other that he was a flambouyant queen well known in the sixties and seventies. The film made me see, in relative terms, how quickly times have changed and how homosexuality is so easily accepted now, making me very grateful I wasn't born into that era. This is the bio of a brave man determined not to conform and should be an inspiration to anyone who just wants to do their own thing! John Hurt was excellent but I think this is probably a better book than film.- Was this review helpful to you?

(14)Funny and sad... But never disappointing.
By wcockman (11 reviews) from Southampton , 21 Feb 2012Funny but sad in places, a sad and troubled life. Extremely well acted and a fantastic story line. Highly recommend watching this film- Was this review helpful to you?

A new concept: the biopic about someone of interest!
By scratlin (39 reviews) from Bristol , 11 Dec 2008I could say that i was pretty biased about any John Hurt performance, except that would suggest that he isn't always on top form in everything I've seen him in. His style is theatrical and hammy and there is always a feeling that he mostly plays himself... perhaps this is why seeing John Hurt in so many guises and roles all the more impressive.
It can't have been easy casting this biopic of Quentin Crisp, however Hurt seems like the obvious choice once you see him in action. This film is a joy to behold and Hurt's treatment of the much loved Crisp is loving and deft. Whilst there are flashes of theatrical comedy, the intrinsic sadness of the story prevails... a combination that leaves the viewer inspired.- Was this review helpful to you?

Customer Review
By a customer from UK , 23 Jun 2008As a child growing up in the Seventies I remember this when it ws first screened. I was too young at the time to watch it or appreciate it. However, Quentin Crisp has always fascinated me. He truly is a hero of our modern times. We live in considerably 'enlightened,' times as far as homosexuality is concerned and certainly compared to the times when Quentin Crisp was a young homosexual man.
John Hurt gives a superb performance as Quentin Crisp and captures the charismatic Crisp so well on screen. This is a brilliant film about the life of Quentin Crisp and definitely was ground breaking for its time. I felt myself moved by watching this especially through the sad, tragic and intense moments when he came up against such extreme prejudice from those around him and the society he lived in. God, bless Quentin Crisp!- Was this review helpful to you?

Acting at its best
By Jason Kent from England , 04 May 2006What a great film. John hurt was truly superb portraying quentin crisp in this role.
As far as the biographical story goes. It is whitty, funny, touching, heart felt, sad and flamboyant.
A true depection of how hard it was to grow up in a society that did not understand the word gay.
Thoroughly recommended.- Was this review helpful to you?
