Sean Connery is in majestic form as the Franciscan friar who, with novice Christian Slater, investigates a series of murders in a remote 14th-century abbey, incurring the wrath of vicious inquisitor F Murray Abraham in the process. Director Jean-Jacques Annaud has decoded Umberto Eco's cryptic bestseller with an eye-blinkingly ornate visual style. While the inhabitants of the abbey are mostly as grotesque as gargoyles, the Holmesian figure of Connery dominates and elucidates with the kind of deductive brilliance that Conan Doyle's sleuth was to display centuries later — though Watson would have found this riddle not at all elementary.

Curious, remote, randomly developed and edited, this can never have been an obvious candidate for box-office success: yet it did pretty well.

    Medieval whodunnit

An excellent film, full of atmosphere - you can almost feel the cold chill. Masterful direction, use of lighting, magnificent sets and scenery. The sense of suspicion, superstition, fear and religious fervour are palpable. To transpose a whodunnit into a medieval setting was no mean ambition - it has been done superbly. Not surprised to hear that it panned in America - far too subtle for them...

Incidentally features a brief, grimy but very very sexy love scene. Not to be missed.

    Great book, nearly great film

The setting and atmosphere of the book are almost perfectly realised. The lead and most of the supporting cast, including several grotesques are convincing enough.

My only quibbles concern the acting of the novice, which detracts from the overall tone and the simplification of the narrative, which means that some of the subtlety of the story is lost. Not quite a masterpiece, then, but still highly recommended.

Connery to play Vet, Sir Billi The Vet

    • 07 Dec 2005

Sir Sean Connery is set to give his voice to a cartoon character Sir Billi The Vet. The movie star knight is to appear in a low budget cartoon made in Scotland that tells the veterinary tale of Sir Billi, who has more than a passing similarity to Sir Sean, and his sidekick goat, voiced by fellow Scot Alan Cumming (Goldeneye, Titus). Richard Briers (Much Ado About Nothing, Love's Labour's Lost) and Miriam Margolyes (Ladies In Lavender, Romeo + Juliet) are both to give their voices to characters... Read more
