Despite being cluttered with clichés from other films, this action drama is still efficiently exciting cinema, thanks to the electrifying chemistry between the leads. Samuel L Jackson and Kevin Spacey play Chicago police negotiators — cops skilled at talking hostage-takers out of the dead ends into which they've put themselves. Jackson, fresh from persuading a madman not to kill his daughter, is accused of stealing from police funds. So he occupies the Internal Affairs headquarters and takes captives to buy himself time to clear his name. It's when Spacey is called in to negotiate with the negotiator that director F Gary Gray's movie really comes alive.
"...Jackson has what is probably his juiciest role since PULP FICTION....A satisfyingly tense and booby-trapped thriller..." -- Rating: B+
This is a superb film that I would recommend everyone get. An absolute joy to watch 2 great actors in action(Spacey and S.Jackson) Samuel Jackson is a magnificent as a negotitator who turns hostage taker to prove his innocence. Funny, thrilling with plenty of twists and turns which makes this an immensilely enjoyable viewing experience. I cannot praise this film highly enough. Get it NOW!
Wow - what can I say? This film is absolutely brilliant. The acting is superb, Kevin Spacey and Samuel L Jackson perfect, the timing of the action excellent.
It is over 2 hours long yet it is so enthralling you hardly notice - Jackson works for the police as a negotiator, in hostage situations who is apparently guilty of murdering his partner. His only chance to prove his innocence is to hold people hostage, and insist on another negotiator who is not linked to his precinct where he believes there is 'bad cops' - enter Kevin Spacey - wow - what more could you ask for?!
