Veteran director Michael Anderson may seem an odd choice to handle this special effects-laden fairy-tale. But he invests the sequel to Carlo Collodi's classic story with a certain old-fashioned charm. Now a real 12-year-old boy, Gabriel Thompson is transformed back into a puppet after drinking a potion given to him by a carnival crone, who turns out to be sinister puppeteer Udo Kier. But the twist is that Martin Landau's ageing woodcutter has also imbibed and soon becomes enraptured by his unexpected adventures. Technically, it's quietly impressive. If only the same could be said for the song-and-dance routines.
It was fine, the story itself was typical and interesting. On the other hand though, I just thought it was a bit weak in some parts, like the make up used wasn't effective and some of the acting was a bit cringe worthy.
