Demonic Doings

One of the great things about the Italian horror films of this period is the disparate casts they manage to assemble: here are Richard Johnson, whom I saw play Lear at Stratford, the American actress Joanna Cassidy, Russian Lila Kedrova, who won an Oscar for 'Zorba the Greek' and Edmund Purdom, the 'Student Prince'. Apart from the cast, there are the elements you would associate with this genre: garish colour, odd dubbing, creepy strings above piano arpeggios, flashy and sometimes startling camera work, and some dodgy special effects. This also boasts some beautiful location shots and use of lighting in art galleries and churches. It gets less effective the more it cranks up, largely because rather too much is put on the shoulders of the child actress, but, if this is a genre you enjoy, as I do, you'll enjoy this film, so long as you can put 'Berberian Sound Studio' to the back of your mind, that is.- Was this review helpful to you?
