    Rated - 3 stars

    Lyrical

Memories of hideous German reprisals in a small Tuscan village lead a small band of peasants head out into the countryside and escape with their lives.

By turns lyrical, violent and dreamlike, this quaint tale is extremely watchable, though late 1970s film editing techniques abound and fracture the fragile ambience of the film.

The performances are excellent and the scenery fills in for a lack of a solid plot.

Back stories are merely hinted at and not worked through but the story has an ethereal, magic realism quality which holds the attention.

    Many faults but interesting.
