Jennifer Aniston again tries to escape her Friends persona in this uneven romantic comedy directed, rather surprisingly, by The Madness of King George's Nicholas Hytner. When Aniston finds out she's pregnant by her oafish ex-boyfriend she asks her gay friend Paul Rudd to help her bring up the child. As expected, she falls in love with him, but the resulting mess it makes of both their lives is sad rather than romantically humorous, while the ending is contrived and unbelievable. It's well meaning, with some nice performances by co-stars Alan Alda and Nigel Hawthorne, but ultimately unsatisfying.
Another contemporary American take on relationships, which seems predicated on a dislike of sexual activities, insisting that a homosexual man is a woman's best friend.
...this movie was sweet, but with little substance.
In a truly shocking move, Jennifer Aniston once again stretches those acting wings to play a harmless, oh-so-sweet social worker who talks candidly to 13 year olds about sex.
When she moves in with a post-break up gay man (Paul Rudd), the two fast become best friends, and the constant question of 'could there be more?' is blown out of your mind by the presence of occasional boyfriend, Ira from 'Mad About You'.
When Aniston falls pregnant (not by Rudd) things start to go wrong for the two. Rudd falls in love, and Aniston falls in love with Rudd. Or something like that. Either way, they have to address some questions. Will the two end up together? Or will they walk their seperate paths?
Its not a bad movie, indeed, its very sweet. Its just there ain't a whole lot there.
This film is mixture of comedy, romance and unhappiness. I liked this film a lot. , am a bit concerned about why people put emhapsis on it being a gay film. Yes it is and a good one at that. Found it very moving and goes to prove that no one chooses to be gay or straight and that sometimes there can be confusion and I am living proof as i can relate to this story. Maybe people shouldn't be so quick to judge. Yes would reccomend this one...
LOVED this film! And Paul Rudd is gorgeous! It was funny, sad, touching, entertaining - everything you could ask for really!

No major storylines, No outstanding acting, but all in all a great easy to watch chick flick. I watched it whilst chilling out on a monday night with a glass of wine. If you expect a huge blockbuster you'll be disapointed, if you expect what I've described it will give the awwhh!

Aniston gives a very likeable performance in this little film about a girl who falls pregnant and takes up a room with her gay friend so they can raise the child again. The supporting characters are all very estabilished actors, Rudd, Alda, Hawthorne and Janney. This is a very enjoyable and funny film and it should not be taken too seriously.
This film is way better than the Rupert Everett and Madonna fiasco 'The Next Best Thing'.

very enjoyable film went down well
This film is an amazingly sad, funny, happy film all at once. Jennifer Aniston's acting is her best she has done. She here shows she can not just play 'Rachel' but can be a serious actor too. This film is a great explanation of Love. It shows you how happy and painful it can be. Nina (Aniston) falls in love with here gay room mate George. George loves her back but it a different way. The plot is amazing - a sweet, surprising, romantic drama. If only Aniston's other film could reach this standard. A must see for anyone.
I enjoyed this film. I thought it would be a little false and would keep thinking I was watching an episode of Friends, but I was pleasantly suprised. Good story line; good acting - would recommend
Basically this film has a very similar plot to the 60's film A Taste of Honey starring Rita Tushingham but transposed from 60's England to modern New York. It is a far inferior film. Jennifer Aniston was quite good and reasonably convincing. The gay male lead was not at all convincing as a gay man. As seems to be typical in modern American films the dialogue seems to oscillate between squeals of pleasure and surprise, psycho babble, characters lushly praising each other or falling out in an extreme manner. Do people really behave like that over there? If so they are an alien people from an alien land. In the 60's original the two principal characters liked each other and had a real friendship but you could feel and relate to their physical distaste for each other. It has a ludicrously contrived ending. Poor old Nigel Hawthorne is like a Derby winner being taken to the seaside to give kids a ride. Having said all that, my wife loved it and wept copiously at the end!
Entertaining easy to watch film. The plot was unconventional and managed to keep the interest up, as it was not clear the end
