    [Highly rated reviewer]

I saw this film in '80 or '81 while I was in the British Army. While lacking the flashy visual effects of Platoon (or 'Spitoon' as it was known) and Apocalypse Now, it is a far better film than these two. The jungle scenes are spot on and the base camp humour between the toms is just perfect. Well worth watching.

I thought that the film was ok, but if you are looking for an action packed war film, then this isn't for you. There is the odd fighting scene, but a lot of the time they are sitting around their base camp drinking lager, and chatting. It was interesting to watch, but once is enough!

This is a very good film in lots of ways and only let down by some typically Aussie-style basic directing and production typical of films of that era.

I enjoyed this film a lot. For once, the camp humour, mission briefing and mission scenes portrayed soldiering as it is (or was) and not as some far-fetched Hollywood-esque load of nonsense. Clearly, the military advisers were listened to and their advice acted upon in filming. There is one particularly good scene when the unit is on its first patrol. Their patrolling skills are spot on, even from how they position their feet to minimise noise and hand signals. Consequently, this film had such a real feel to it that you could imagine absolutely every episode being based upon fact.

It wasn't slow, characters were deveolped and then consumed by the war as was a lot of beer but then isnt that so true?

I heartily recommend this for those who enjoy good war films. It is different and thank god for that. I also recommend it for current and ex-forces as they will especially relate to and enjoy a lot about this film.
