The winner of the Oscar for best foreign film, this is the compelling story of a history teacher whose acquiescence in the military regime in Argentina is shaken when she begins to suspect she has adopted the child of a disappeared couple. It's an impressive effort from Luis Puenzo, who made his name directing commercials, that uses Norma Aleandro's credible conversion and the dignified determination of the ever-vigilant women of the Plaza del Mayo to make its political points. As much a treatise on the sacred trust of motherhood as a plea for human rights, this subtly impassioned drama is both persuasive and uplifting.
...explosive! Incredibly moving. Chilling, heartbreaking honesty that continues to haunt the mind.
I have seen a few films that deal with the military regime in Argentina in the 80's but never one that looks at the wider problems after the troubles. It is about a nation coming to terms with either its silent guilt while the 'subversives' were being slaughtered, the families of those whose children and grandchildren were taken away and how once they are brought back together they are forced to examine their own conciences. The acting and detail of all the characters is beautifully directed without ever resorting to a cliche, sometimes the music was a bit intrusive but this is a minor problem. I highly recommend this, especially to those who have a link to Argentina.
