This is a well-intentioned but mediocre adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's Pulitzer Prize-winning novella about a Cuban fisherman who finally lands a mighty marlin. Anthony Quinn (Zorba the Greek) gives a layered performance as the embattled protagonist despite the difficult-to-film subject matter. Quinn's family members populate this remake of the 1958 film, which starred Spencer Tracy (a hard act to follow) and won an Oscar for its score. If only Quinn had reeled in The Little Mermaid — that would have animated this otherwise torpid tale.
Expensive but poor-looking and stultifyingly dull one-character drama with variable production effects, a low key Moby Dick. Interesting but not effective.
SIMPLY A CLASSIC AND ALL A MOVIE NEEDS . NO STUNTS , EXPLOSIONS , SPECIAL EFFECTS , BUT A GREAT STORY . A MUST SEE AND NOT TO BE FORGOTTEN ! 10/10 FROM ME !!! SEE FOR YOURSELF TO BE NOT !!! DISSAPOINTED BUT WELL ENTERTAINED BY ONE OF HOLLYWOODS ALL TIME GEREATEST : SPENCER TRACY IN A ALMOST ONE MAN PERFORMANCE IN A BATTLE AGAINST THE ELEMENTS ........AND THE SWORDFISH OF COURSE !
