Most helpful review The Omen

  • Very good in its own right; and more than that in its own genre

I'm a bit biased , because I have always enjoyed supernatural thrillers ( and good ones are not too easy to come by). This one is a cracker IMHO. Great cast in Peck/Remmick and supporting players ( especially the always-impressive Billie Whitelaw). Very interesting story, which has been copied many times since this film. Screenplay, editing , direction, camerawork all top notch.

But, at the end of the day, it's just plain exciting and spooky to watch-----it accomplishes everything it sets out to achieve and I cannot believe anyone not being engrossed from start to finish.

It is a very good movie , so good that it spawned several sequels ( both of which, whilst not reaching the heights of the original, did not disgrace it either). I would love to see a graph showing the trend for new-born boys called 'Damian' after this film LOL ..........

    Highly recommended.

Countless imitators later, 'The Omen' still stands up pretty well as the one of the granddaddies of the Satanic horror genre. That's probably down to Donner's matter-of-fact approach to the storytelling - as unbelievable as the events are that are being depicted, Donner loads the dice to make it all entirely reasonable that this is actually all about a man slowly losing his mind, and less about him thinking that his little boy is the AntiChrist. Still featuring one of the cinema's best decapitations, it's helped enormously by committed acting and a thoroughly ominous score, one of Jerry Goldsmith's finest.

  • Down the pecking order in today's films.

The film is dated and in this day and age way down the pecking order in horror films.

I watched this hoping for scares after recommendations provided this. In my opinion it had few scares and jumpers in it. Maybe if you're more into religion it would get to you more.

It's a good watch but only if you're into the classic nature of horrors.

  • Influential but the most horrific thing is the acting

American couple in Rome, woman gives birth, loses baby, Priest recommends replacement, couple relocate to UK, strange things start happening.

Hugely influential but not-aged-well horror film which still manages to be creepy yet is undone most of the time by the horrific acting.

I was expecting a bit more from the usually great Gregory Peck but he’s so unconvincing at delivering his lines it’s quite sad to see him like this and Lee Remick isn’t much better.

Saving graces though Billie Whitelaw as the very sinister Mrs. Blaylock and young Harvey Stephens as Damien.

The music is very hit and miss with the earlier incidental parts being awful but the later darker pieces are very good and really build up the film.

  • Horribly dated

Other than the brilliant scene at the start where the nanny manicly cries out LOOK AT ME DAMIAN, I LOVE YOU, IT'S ALL FOR YOU and then hangs herself, after that scene though it goes downhill, very dated, very dull, not much happens other than the classic beheading scene but outside of those 2 scenes (which is why i generously gave it 2*) it's very dull and predictable and the ending oh deary me....
