Most helpful review
Not much of an outlaw, but a cracking Western.
By Tinderbox from England , 12 Jun 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
Clint Eastwood finally proved that he was more than the protégé of Sergio Leone when it came to Westerns; he was able to make them on his own terms.
This is a brilliantly entertaining film, building on the undelivered potential of "Hang 'Em High" and "High Plains Drifter". Eastwood's Josey Wales is a man with nothing left to live for; he has buried his family, and is being hunted down by the men he once fought alongside.
Clintwood's camerawork is solid and effective, trying out shaky handheld shots as a contrast to the usual array of panoramas. We even get a glimpse of his attitude to violence (inherent in his 1991 classic "Unforgiven") when the outlaw decides to hang up his gun: "I guess we all died a little in the war."
"The Outlaw Josey Wales" is not particularly subversive, nor is it artistically ambitious. It's just a hugely enjoyable, brilliantly made 70s Western.- Was this review helpful to you?

(42)Not very good at all
By a customer , 13 Apr 2013I'm a big fan of Clint Eastwood, but I have to say this film was very disapointing. Badly acted, really badly edited, and just a waste of my time to watch. All of his other westerns are better than this one.!- Was this review helpful to you?

A classic Clint Eastwood movie post Sergio Leone style
By a customer , 26 Jan 2013Clint Eastwood, plays a really gritty character throughout this movie, with some great landscapes, and unlike some earlier Sergio Leone movies has more than a few lines to say. The old Indian had some great lines, and whilst loads of shooting of bad guys, has a nice little twist towards the end. One for my Clint Eastwood collection- Was this review helpful to you?

Clint delivers
By pulteneyloon (14 reviews) , 13 Jan 2013An outstanding Clint Eastwood movie. The 2+ hours allow a real story to develop, Throughout Eastwood's tight direction keeps it enjoyable and wonderfully watchable. There are of course the usual Eastwood themes and tropes but these are handled really sensitively. Great fun, lots of clever stand-offs and a happy ending.- Was this review helpful to you?

Stop spitting on the dog, Clint!
By Bassman71 (617 reviews) from Didsbury, England , 30 Aug 2011Farmers wife and child killed by Union army, joins guerrillas, guerrillas surrender, farmer doesnt, becomes infamous outlaw.
Clint Eastwood starring and directing in this decent Western which is well shot & has lots of good performances throughout.
Also nice to see that the Native Americans arent portrayed as the usual stereotype in most films of this genre and played as well-rounded characters which adds to the film.
It is quite long but doesnt really drag, music isnt that great although was pleased to see a lot of references from Red Dead Redemption were taken from here too.- Was this review helpful to you?
