    [Highly rated reviewer]

This film has more names than you can shake a stick at... and from before they were famous. Even of this film wasn't fantastic with Coppola at his best it would be worth watching just to see Tom Cruise's nose before he had Hollywood surgery. A creacker and a must-see!

brilliant film, brilliant actors. good story line not predictable. sad at some points and heart warming at others. good story of true friendship and the hard ship of growing up poor and on the wrong side of town. i would recommend if you like 'stand by me' 'grease 1' only because of the t-birds and the 1950/60 era this film has a good story and isn't a musical, contains some violence. apologies i am not great at writing reviews but this is defiantly worth a watch.

  • A great film but maybe a bit too respectful

I picked up the book on a whim and really got into it immediately. I found out there was a film with a great cast and director. This seemed like a good bet that the movie would be great too. The film casting is spot on but I think the direction is missing something, It needs to have a a little bit of chaos and riotous direction injected into it. The film now has a great soundtrack of rock and roll, but it isn't a rock and roll film. The book was written by a teenager, but this is a film directed by Coppella, an old man. The blu ray looks fantastic and has worthwhile and interesting features. One of the best is a news report from 83 about students and teacher who sent a letter to Coppolla asking him to make the film of the book. A very good making of that isn't too long.

  • big disappointment

I must have experienced the book differently to Coppola as I felt the story was rushed and barely touched on the relationships of the boys and how much they all cared about Johnny. The film doesnt feel as personal or emotional as the book. The only comment I want to make about casting and performance is that of Tom Cruise and his shoddy accent. Dont take this as a 100% negative review, I thought the film was passable to those unfamiliar of the story but those who loved the book I would recommend you dont get too excited about the film...

  • Very disappointing

How did so many of the actors in this film go on to become such big stars? C Thomas Howell aside, every performance is laughable, even with Francis Ford Coppola behind the camera. When Patrick Swayze isn't the worst actor in a film, you know you're on shaky ground. There is every opportunity in this film to develop the characters and explore what it is about their surroundings that makes them as they are, but it is wasted. The plot is meandering and obvious and made ninety minutes seem a very long time: it's as though the writers filmed random extracts from the novel then tried to fabrticate some form of narrative in editing. I think the film benefits from a double-dose of misplaced nostalgia: that of the eighties for the fifties, and that of now for the eighties, and this raises ratings and expectations far higher than they should be.

Quite a few faces in early performances here and lets be honest, not their finest. This said there are some interesting moments which hint at what was to come for them. You get the feeling Coppola let them improvise some of the emotional scenes and the outcome only goes to prove teenage boys don't do emotion!
