fascinating little morality piece
By a customer from London , 02 Sep 2010[Highly rated reviewer]
Beyond the locations and the costumes this is certainly no Western, rather it is a savage indictment on the dangers of gossip and mob mentality. The briefness of the film and the use of only 2 or 3 locations throughout keeps this film tense and claustrophobic. It may have been a comment on the problems of lynching at the time, but it still has just as much to say now. Henry Fonda is, of course, as brilliant as ever.- Was this review helpful to you?

(5)The OX Bow Incident, a classic western.
By thecuckoo (107 reviews) , 22 Feb 2013This western makes you think as a posy catches what they think are the bandits and want to hang them there and then without a trial. Are the so called bandits guilty or just in the wrong place at the wrong time. With not much proof to support their story it soon turns into a lynching mob. Moody movie which causes much food for thought.- Was this review helpful to you?

One of the greatest films
By Prora (12 reviews) from London , 08 May 2011I rate this as a truly great film - in a completely understated fashion it shows up racism in action and, moreover, proves its point simply by showing the tragic outcome of the bigoted cowboys' actions. A must see.- Was this review helpful to you?

A sharp little Western
By RJNeb2 (934 reviews) from London , 05 Sep 2010Once it was the Wild West, but as law and order was imposed, a veneer of respectability was imposed. This potent film shows that it was just a veneer as a lynch mob goes in pursuit of some cattle rustlers/ murderers without taking the time to find out the truth. Looking on, in an increasing sense of desperation, is the stoic Henry Fonda, one of the few voices of reason. Director William A. Wellman keeps everything lean and tight and the penny-pinching decision to film it all on a soundstage actually adds to its sharp sense of claustrophia and inevitability.- Was this review helpful to you?
