Nicole Kidman gives a knockout performance as a 40-something saucepot in this easy-to-watch story of a pen-pal fiancée and a death-row inmate.

Good but Could Have Been BetterBy Bluesman (80 reviews) from Derbys , 05 May 2013
[Highly rated reviewer]This film is certainly a good vision of sixties something back woods of America. Good performances from Nicole Kidman as the the white trash femme fatale and John Cussack as the convicted killer. All in all you get a very 'red neck' feel of the characters throughout the movie. However where the movie fails is that after successfully building steamy chemistry between the characters it then reverts to typical Hollywood format with everyone virtually fully clothed for the sex scenes. It could have been so much better and grittier if the director had the courage to hold the steamy atmosphere in all the films scenes. That said it is overall a good watch and a curious look at these people who befriend death row inmates.

100 Minutes I Will Never Get BackBy a customer , 07 Dec 2013Terrible. Very little story dragged out for too long then no explanations. It is hard to understand why John Cusack had anything to do with this. Do not waste your time.
fairly unpleasantBy IssyMac (5 reviews) , 02 Dec 2013like some awful hybrid of films set in the deep south & a semi film noir this film does not pull off either the thriller component or the drama aspect. It relies on clichés to shock & the moderate graphic content is purely unpleasant & clearly there to shock. Not worth renting. If you are interested in a film featuring aspects of racial intolerance try Mississippi Burning instead & don't waste your rental choices on this.
SUB TITLES NEEDEDBy Gary2 (10 reviews) from Ringwood, Hampshire , 30 Nov 2013Very difficult to follow the 'deep South' dialogue - it's difficult enough with many American films anyway - and as a result, the plot seemed slow to unfold. I was tempted to use subtitles. Nicole Kidman showed her brilliant versatility, as always and she saved the film for me.
Not for the faint heartedBy a customer , 27 Nov 2013Well I wasn't expecting that! Horrible film, so not my cup of tea couldn't wait for it to finish! Some very graphic scenes thank God I didn't go to see this in the cinema.
There is just zero under the surface of this dull film.By hartington (4 reviews) , 27 Nov 2013Just not good enough. Kidman is good in everything, but she just can't carry this, and the way she is used by the director is pretty insulting. A film of awful characters doing awful things. Really weak and lazy direction. The bits that some people have found 'shocking' I just found sad and bizarre. There is just zero under the surface of this dull film.
