An acute piece of historical foresight, with a marvellous basic idea. A group of picnickers wandering in a summery wood... read more on Time Out
A modest masterpiece, 'The Party and the Guests' finds a group of well-dressed Czech bourgeoisie stumbling into an eccentric outdoor dinner party, by turns interrogated and welcomed by their hosts. The illogicality of the film's action was obviously interpreted by the authorities as a satire on the Stalinist state (in which everyone is a potential political enemy), but the director has claimed that it could apply to any human situation. The print on this DVD is not in the best condition, but well done to Second Run for making it available anyway.
Quite weird but interesting. A group of bourgeois people invited along to a party in the woods who are mocked, intimidated and looked after by a somewhat sinister group of men, with a supposedly benign but authoratative leader, clearly echos of the state of play in Czechoslovakia at the time. Interesting to see the adaptations and collaborations within the group. Atmosperic and opaque but thought provoking.
