Great production: was an extra in the movie
By Olganika (6 reviews) from London , 10 Sep 2010[Highly rated reviewer]
Hi everyone, I've been waiting for years for the theatrical release of Manolete.
I worked as an extra for two weeks during the production of the bullfighting scenes of Linares.(was filmed in Alicante)
Unfortunately, due to financial difficulties from the Spanish producer, it never made it to the screen.
I must say, I found the movie better than I expected. It portrayed really well the world of bullfighting of 1940s Spain.
And the story is not as much about bullfighting, but more about the battle between humans. It intertwines beautifully the passion of two lovers with the love of a man for his art.
Penelope did a great job as the 1940s modern woman surrounded by a world of tradition and superstition.
Great editing and camera work. Proud to have been part of this great production crew.
Menno Meyjes worked many years on this project until he found Adrien Brody, who is also a great actor and looks like the spitting image of Manolete. Enjoy!- Was this review helpful to you?

(7)Lacking Passion
By Plocket (9 reviews) from Staffordshire , 03 Jun 2011I thought this film was beautiful, however it just wasn't passionate enough for me. I didn't quite gel with either of the characters despite both of them being highly acclaimed actors (in my opinion). Brody brooded but lacked the arrogance I felt the part required, and Cruz looked gorgeous but again lacked the bit of spark I felt was required for the role. Try it, enjoy it, but I don't think you'll be thrilled.- Was this review helpful to you?

Why do some women go for bullfighters?
By Warden (18 reviews) from York, England , 15 Mar 2011[Highly rated reviewer]
Most of us will watch this as a Penelope Cruz vehicle, and it is the relationship of her character, Lupe, with Manolete rather than the portrayal of bullfighting that chiefly interests us.
So what might make a beautiful woman take up with the most beautiful ugly man she has ever known? I have to be honest here. My mother taught me that I should be kind, gentle and respectful to women and I have always rather resented the suggestion that men who aren't like that should have any success with women. Lupe is beautiful, an actress, has an open relationship with men, but very clearly likes them sexually assertive and even physically cruel.
This is a relationship, therefore, that is going to be challenged. Manolete is trapped in a career in which rewards come only to the bravest, and not only is his extended family financially demanding but there is, as he says, no future for a retired bullfighter. His only escape seems to be death or as a cripple. Lupe not only wants her independence, not easy in Franco's Spain, but to be the mistress of a strong and successful man. Can Lupe offer Manolete the consolation that he really craves? Can Lupe get from Manolete security, commitment and perhaps a family that convention suggests she should desire? If this were a Hollywood sitcom the viewer would be spoonfed the answer, but this isn't and you will not be.- Was this review helpful to you?

A very slow burn....
By Broadpaws (4 reviews) from Norfolk , 01 Sep 2010I did enjoy this movie, but it was a very slow burn, set in teh 1940's it is about Spains most famous bullfighter and his obsessive love (cruz)
This is very slow, often hard to hear as teh dialogue is spoken often in whispers, but worth a watch - especially for any romantics out there!- Was this review helpful to you?

Romantic "Deja vu" with added bulls
By enderit (3 reviews) from Inverclyde , 24 Aug 2010It is not a bad movie itself and I feel, like many Spanish movies, that it might have lost lots in translation. Penelope Cruz is probably the only reason why I've picked it to watch and, whilst her performance was very good, the script was lacking originality and felt like a deja vu with added bulls.- Was this review helpful to you?
