'The Passion of Joan of Arc' may be a silent film, but what words could do justice to the extraordinary range of emotions the film contains? Instead, Carl Theodor Dreyer tells the story of Joan?s trial and martyrdom almost exclusively through the enormously expressive face of actress Maria Falconetti. The result is one of the most incredible films ever made.

Shooting his film entirely in close-up, Dreyer provides an intimate study of one woman?s unshakeable faith under the most terrible pressures imaginable, and the main reason it works so well is the stunning work of Maria Falconetti whose performance simply has to be seen to be believed. Falconneti?s face is filled with anguish, confusion, fear as she is interrogated, tortured and humiliated by her captors. There is not a single second of this film in which she is not completely convincing and completely heartbreaking.

This timeless masterpiece is a stunning achievement, a remarkably intimate study of faith which is shot with such an eye-burning intensity that it will leave you gasping for air. Dreyer?s direction is outstanding while Falconetti is simply flawless.

There has never been another film like 'The Passion of Joan of Arc' and there never will be again, because there will never be another Maria Falconetti.

this is an absolute cinematic experience. out and beyond its time, shot in 1928, lost for years and found by chance, this is the most astounding monument of the film art. the sheer emotional energy that carries it is nothing less than atomizing. it burns the screen and leaves nothing unreached. camera work and the storytelling is light years ahed of what was being done at the time.
