What has Mel Gibson got against the English? Five years after his Scottish epic Braveheart, he repeats his anti-English stance in this action drama, set during the American War of Independence. Mel plays Benjamin Martin, a farmer living peacefully in South Carolina who, along with his gung-ho son Gabriel (Heath Ledger), comes out fighting against the English army. The battle scenes are ferociously well-staged, but some may baulk at the almost pantomimic villainy of Jason Isaacs's cruel Colonel Tavington and the historically inaccurate atrocities he is seen to commit.

Simple-minded and inaccurate history, in which Gibson does his familiar Mad Max turn, as an out-of-control action hero; but the movie, though overlong, has a commendable energy and verve.

    A travesty

This is a travesty of history. In all the records of the War of Independence there are no incidents of mass murder as those portrayed in this film. However, the director is German, and there are many incidents of Germans behaving like this in WWII.

    Trash

    Absolute trash.

Don't bother - Anything with Mel Gibson in has to be either anti-Brit or anti-Semitic.

The previous reviewers have said it all before. This movie has nothing to do with historical fact ( a plantation owener who doesn't own slaves?) - Mr Gibson, please don't offend our sensibilities.

    Avoid!

    loved it !!!

I loved this film, even though I am English.

Mel Gibson in his perfect role, family Man who is forced into fighting, and what a fighter, some upsetting scenes and know the historical fact leaves a bit to be desired, nonetheless a breathless ride, good story great action.

    Rubbish

Typical Gibson rubbish as usual anti English. The history is completely innacurate and the acting often over the top. However no doubt Americans will love it as it shows them so brave and good. For me a load of tosh.

    Bloody awful

I really was looking forward to seeing this. It looked good, it should have been good. The acting was wooden, the script appalling and the historical accuracy way below standard. The very best part of it was the end of the end credits.
