All eyes in Hollywood were focused sharply on this pacey thriller because it was the first film to be released by DreamWorks SKG, the studio founded by Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen. Critics, though, were underwhelmed and it underperformed at the box office. However, action fans will be happy as all the formulaic set pieces are present and correct — ticking bomb, car chases etc. Nicole Kidman isn't convincing as a nuclear scientist, but George Clooney's confident lead performance helped his transition from small-screen idol to international movie star.
"...THE PEACEMAKER culminates in a show-stopping action sequence....Directed by Ms. Leder with crisp economy and furious energy..."
Think James Bond with US cheese and a bit of Leathal Weapon thrown in for good measure and, as it was directed by a lady very stylish at times and a cut above the usual action adventure stuff enhanced by a yet again amazing soundtrack by Hans Zimmer.
A very enjoyable romp that makes you think after an hour what on earth else could happen in the second hour so much is happening. Clooney is very funny in his Bondesque tongue in cheek role and without that I would probably have given this film a 4 star rating. It is obvious that the actors enjoyed making this film and therefore the performances are all the more gripping if not self mocking at times. See it.
Over looked on it's Autumn 1997 release. The Peacemaker is more relevant today than ever. Keep in mind this clever action thriller was made four years before 9/11 and at the time the lot may have said the plot seemed a little far fetched, But then again if some one had made a film about two aircraft smashing into the World Trade centre way back in 1997, no doubt it was have come under a mauling by the critics and certain religiouse sectors. But now in these uncertain times the film rings a lot more true. Clooney Is great as the man of action, and Kidman fairs up pretty well as his advisor. But it's the tension that the film ramps up that is truly white knuckle stuff. There are so many images that linger long after the film has ended, from the steam train, cutting through the forrest, the the show stopping car chase and the knuckle chewing final moments that make this an excellent and intelligent thriller, Sure at times it can't make up it's mind to be a Bond movie or a Jack Ryan techno thriller, but this hybrid of both is still top draw entertainment, that also boasts an excellent music score by Hans Zimmer. Forget the overrated FACE OFF and CON-AIR, this was the best action thriller of 1997!
Is there anything he can't do? Ocean's Eleven and Syriana star George Clooney has been appointed as a United Nations (UN) peace envoy. The 46-year-old actor, who also appeared in O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Solaris and, funnily enough, The Peacemaker, was officially given the title by UN secretary general Ban Ki-Moon in New York. UN spokesman Michele Montas said Clooney had been chosen for his to focus public attention on "crucial international political and social issues". It follows Read more
