Julia Roberts (ERIN BROCKOVICH) stars in THE PELICAN BRIEF as sharp law student Darby Shaw whose querying mind gets her into trouble. A faithful adaptation of John Grisham's (THE FIRM) best-selling novel, this taut thriller follows the travails that beset Shaw when her theory on the cause of the deaths of two Supreme Court .. When this was made, John Grisham's stock in Hollywood was so high that one of his shopping lists could probably have spawned a blockbuster movie. If it had done, it would undoubtedly have followed the formula consolidated by this, the second of the big screen Grisham dramatisations: dense plotting, lots of legalese, two charismatic leads and a cavalcade of stars in small roles. Here, Julia Roberts plays the aspiring young legal eagle who stumbles across a massive conspiracy that reaches right to the Oval Office; her only ally is Denzel Washington's sceptical reporter, who finds himself investigating the scoop of a lifetime. The two leads are fine, but the real coup is the depth of talent in the supporting cast — Sam Shepard and John Heard are among those delivering killer cameos, but everyone is eclipsed by Robert Culp's witty portrayal of a shifty president. The plot combines legal thriller with conspiracy movie, so it's no surprise that the film's director is Alan J Pakula — whose previous work includes Presumed Innocent and The Parallax View — who weaves his way adeptly through the myriad characters and subplots.
Mundane chase movie, a paranoid thriller that rarely rings true and mainly consists of Julia Roberts being chased but not caught. Her fans may enjoy it.

Definitely one of the best films of a John Grisham book, fast paced with twists and turns in the plot.
Great acting from Julia Roberts and one for the collection.
Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington both give superb performances. I had read this John Grisham thriller some time before so I cannot comment on how true to the book the film is, but this shouldn't disappoint. Read the book and watch the film or watch the film and read the book; either way you should enjoy both.
In a word: disappointing. Grisham is a brilliant writer who doesn't deserve to have his name connected to this tosh. It's the same early nineties Grisham movie:bad camera work, bad sountrack, very bad acting and hileriosly bad suits. The two leads are unconvincing and the direction lacks the kind of stamina a Grisham thiller needs. His books have been adapted into much better films,ie Runaway Jury, A time to kill, The chamber and The Rainmaker. Give this one a miss!
This is one of my all time favourite films. It is packed with suspense from start to finish, never lacking in speed the whole way through. Roberts and Washington work brilliantly together. Definitely one of those watch again and again films...
Firstly, people who rent this need to realise the film is on both sides of the disc. Secondly, I was quite disappointed with this film. I did watch all of it hoping it would get better, but I couldn't get into it at all. For me it never really got going.
The Pelican Brief, This is one of my all time favourite movies of Julia Roberts and was the first movie I bought with her in mind. She and Denzel Washington were great in this tense action gripping action thriller. Two Supreme Court Justices have been assassinated. One lone law student has stumbled upon the truth. An investigative journalist wants her story. Everybody else wants her dead.
This is a film I have seen several times and I don't mind looking at it over again. It is a good story with loads of plots and intrigues.
I recommend it.

"...A celebration of liquid brown eyes and serious star quality....[Roberts and Washington] make the movie shine..."
"...A taut, intellectual thriller....Roberts is simply terrific....Washington also impresses..."
