Deserves to sink without trace.

The film tries to cover as much as the book it's based on (by Sebastian Junger), but spreads itself too thin. It's neither hard-core docu-drama, which the scale of the events really needs, nor personal tragedy, which a tighter script could have delivered. As it is, there are just too many events too lightly touched on, and too many characters too thinly drawn.
And as for the special effects, CGI is still at the stage where in a PC game you'd go, 'wow this is great', but in live-action cinema CGI waves helicopters and boats just look fake. Really, I got no impression of the sheer force and terror of the seas being faced, and was left uninvolved and unmoved.
The book, though, (same name) is a great read, and that I recommend.- Was this review helpful to you?

The Perfect Waste of Time...
By a customer , 11 Sep 2012Painful, needlessly soppy, badly researched, but some good big waves (hence the half star!). For a film apparently based on a true story, there's not much of a story and it must be pretty loosely based. For anyone with any knowledge of boats (like has played with one in the bath) this will be a painful two hours. My favourite bit was my husband screaming with laughter at various ridiculous scenarios. Choose a different film!- Was this review helpful to you?

swoosh swoosh
By a customer , 18 Oct 2011i have not read the book, but it is probably going to be better. The story is predictable, however the photography is spectacular. It is worth watching for that.- Was this review helpful to you?

Read the book!
By a customer , 14 Oct 2011I watched this film because I recently read the book which is AMAZING and couldn't get it out of my head. Although the film didn't ruin the memory of the book and in most aspects it's a fairly true account (in brief) I don't think I really gained anything by seeing the film and the book just offers sooooo much more. As a film in itself, I don't think it in any way captures the story or the characters, but maybe that's hard for me to judge, post book. It would have been interesting to see the story made in a more indie/docu way - I found the cheesy, melodramatic hollywood soundtrack intensely irritating. I felt George Clooney's character has been sexed up/altered for the film, but the other characters were OK.- Was this review helpful to you?
