I haven't seen the very final cut but have seen the work in progress (repeatedly) at crew rushes and showings of the film in it's later stages.

It's funny, the characters are endearing and it's visually incredible - a level of detail and sense of reality that fully justifies the long process of stop motion animation.

The relationship between the Captain blundering through life and his second in command trying to keep him on course forms the backbone of the film, but behind them are a cast of eccentrics and larger than life characters that keep the interest on 2nd, 3rd and umpteenth viewings.

I enjoy the complete contempt for historical fact and the weird twisting of famous characters, play spot the anachronism!

What I don't like.. not much, one or two jokes seem a bit 14 year old boyish, but that's being picky.

Funniest film I have seen in ages. Really clever, you need to see it at least twice to be able to observe all the clever parodies and funny sayiings. Like the dots appearing on the map where the ship sales, which are actually being thrown out of the ship by the crew! Hilarious! Some characters look awfully like others in the Aardman range only in disguise, but apart from that well worth watching whatever your age. Do have a go at Bobo the chimp butler's word game on the DVD, it is an extra bit of fun. If you haven't read what the story is about it is basically about a pirate who wants to win the cup for the best pirate of the year, by fair means or foul, and his encounter with Darwin, who is after the pirate crew's parrot for his own scientist of the year credits, as the parrot they are all so fond of is really a Dodo! Madcap mayhem ensues. A must watch feelgood film.

  • Massive disappointment.

Massive disappointment. Was expecting so much but it delivered so little. Boring, boring, boring. The voiceovers were weak and the gags (unusually) predictable. I felt no affinity with any of the characters and the traditional gimmicks e. g. The butler monkey with the flash cards failed miserably. The whole thing felt like a cheesy carry on script. Sub-par Aardman. Very disappointing.

  • Good fun with some great voice acting

A good fun kids film with some lovely moments to keep the whole family entertained. Despite looking to my eyes like a skinnier Gerard Butler, Hugh Grant's voice suits the character perfectly. All the voice acting is superb and you really feel for all the characters involved. There is also a lovely cameo by the national treasure that is Brian Blessed which instantly adds a star. Unfortunately the film does drag a little in places with certain aspects set up purely for a fairly minor pay off. However I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone even vaguely interested in animation.
