    [Highly rated reviewer]

This is without doubt the most underrated film in the history of animation.

Darker and leagues more disturbing than anything Disney or Pixar have ever done, Martin Rosen has done a splendid job in transferring Richard Adams' classic novel into movie form, giving all three of the major animal characters great characterisation and successfully creating an atmosphere of fear and insecurity that allows the audience to experience the same sense of confusion and persecution that the dogs are going through.

Superior both to its original source material and to 'Watership Down', this is no cuddly children's tale of anthropomorphism, but instead a harrowing cautionary tale of how we treat this world and the creatures in it.

The ending in particular is just amazing, and the end-credits song one of the most subtlety heartbreaking I've heard.

In my view, the different ending was by far an improvement on the original, and miles more consistent with the rest of the movie's tone.

    Not to be cast aside.

Excellent but l also agree it is not for very young children as most will get upset. This film had a great story line, but as l said is not for the very young.

Don't be fooled by the pg rating - should be a 12/15. I watched it with my 8 year old sister, but we were pretty shocked by the graphic descriptions in it. Other than that it was excellent

  • Classic Animation, But Not For Kids

I love this film, classic, not your bog standard animation. Gives a darker edge to the world of cartoons, and with such a deep rooted topic of animal cruelty that sadly still runs as much today as it did then. When I originally owned this on VHS it was rated 18 and with the content I feel a 12 or 15 would be more appropriate even today. Again would prefer the unedited version.

Another excellent animation from the makers of Watership Down. Dark and poignant it will definitely make you question what we do to other creatures. The dogs are beautifully crafted and command sympathy, whilst the humans... well, why don't you watch it?!

Brilliant. Loved it. Definetely refreshingly different from the newer Walt Disney type all happy/funny animation. Watch it, you won't regret it.
