Excellent movie
By Nobbylamp (23 reviews) from Bromley, England , 23 Jul 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
A 'black comedy' that exposes the hollywood system. Good for star spotting as there are many cameo performances.
Terrific performance by Tim Robbins playing a two faced producer who's being blackmailed by a writer. Some great dialogue.
Great fun... if you're intrigued by hollywood, you'll love it!- Was this review helpful to you?

(36)WHAT A LOAD OF CLAP-TRAP !
By Burnhamite (379 reviews) from BURNHAM , 21 Oct 2012One, having not read the book by Michael Tolkin must assume it to be an enigma, but even a greater puzzle has to be what possessed Robert Altman to make it into a movie !
It is the greatest load of 'hotch-potch' to hit the silver screen and certainly is a waste of time watching- Was this review helpful to you?

mr altman at his best
By lukasz84 (75 reviews) , 08 Feb 2012the player is a darkly humourous, high- intellect reflection on the ugly abuses of the film industry. it is a scathing and ruthless (fortunately never sermon-like) review of hollywood's pomposity, greed and blood thirst.
the film must be heartily recommended as it beautifully highlights mr altman's dexterity, super-sharp wit and infectious joy of movie-making.
one is treated to a directorial masterpiece right at the start; the film opens with a long shot that can teach an attentive student just about everything about camera movement, handling focus, depth staging, and setting up multiple plots.
but the technical merit is not all. it is matched by the piece's unforced and delightfully dark humour which carries it masterfully to a brilliant finish.- Was this review helpful to you?

Didn't play the whole movie.
By gingerspike (410 reviews) from Grimsby , 06 Feb 2012I was really looking forward to this film, expected so much from it, but was quite disappointed; to the point where we made the decision to stop play half way through. There were some good moments of great humour but the film was slow and seemed very dated. It just didn't keep us interested.- Was this review helpful to you?

Just ok
By a customer from London , 17 Jun 2010Poorly paced, never really got into the story. Movie is funny though and has some good moments. Has an interesting ending, directed very well in places but the message doesn't hit home as it should for me.- Was this review helpful to you?

Great film studio satire
By brokenking (255 reviews) from Bristol , 14 Apr 2010There aren't enough films like this available. By that mean I mean films that are willing to create characters about the executives who decide what films we see, put them in a film and make them into someone the audience enjoy following. As Tim Robbins goes about destroying careers and stabbing colleagues in the back, you'll love all twists he pulls to further his end. Dispite the pace you'll treated to great dialogue and stand out performances with an uncertain outcome.- Was this review helpful to you?
