Odd but interesting
By Mik (7 reviews) from Hampton , 06 May 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
This an odd film, yet I couldn't be helped to be drawn to it. The acting is very odd, and this is probably my main critiscism, but once you get passed this, it is a compelling, slow moving, yet interesting story. You can't help wondering how it's all going to end. Very philosophical, with some beautiful traditional Portuguese singing and music, and beautiful of the city. Worth watching as long as you leave your judgement on hold!- Was this review helpful to you?

(10)The Portuguese Nun
By a customer , 07 May 2013The Fado music was delightful as was the scenery. I watch films to improve my French and Portuguese, and here the actors spoke clearly and slowly. The story too unfolded gradually and what a wonder! I'd like to see more films like this one!- Was this review helpful to you?

The Portugese Nun - A Spledour
By Deduson (15 reviews) from Colchester - England , 22 Mar 2013A film which should be watched with ease and enthusiam. Though very slow I've enjoyed every second of it. I do not review a lot but when I do I like to be as truthful as I can. With limited dialogue this film is unique in its approach and plot. Julie (The main character) flutters from one vague meeting to the next, her symbolic development implies for the customs of the people like scenes from a tableau. In each case theres long shots of the characters which quickens its pace when the conversation reaches its climax. A psychology in life and love. Includes also two outstanding Portugese songs. I highly recommended.- Was this review helpful to you?

Oh Dear...
By LittlestBoo (12 reviews) from Ware , 12 Dec 2012For many years I'd been of the opinion that foreign films were all tediously slow, incredibly pretentious drivel ... until 2001 when I was forced by a friend to watch Jeunet's 'Amelie'. What an eye opener that film was. Thanks to Mademoiselle Poulain I discovered a whole new world of cinema. It was a life changing moment. The Portuguese Nun is one of those films that put me off World Cinema for the first 30 years of my life. Pretentious, dreadful script, dreadful acting, dreadful directing, even the editing is awful. If I had a heart I would've taken a hammer to the disc, but I see no reason why I should be the only person to suffer from this visual-vomit.- Was this review helpful to you?

Life's a struggle & so is this film.
By Katya1 (39 reviews) , 27 Nov 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
1 hour into this film - which is beautifully filmed - and I was struggling. Lots of meaningful serious looks from everyone & painful stilted dialogue. But as I've never been there, I enjoyed the shots of Lisbon, its culture and listening to the Portuguese language and music.
Full of angst, life's a struggle & so is this film.- Was this review helpful to you?
