There's more than a touch of vanity about Kevin Costner's overlong futuristic epic, which will surely test the patience of his most ardent fans. Costing over $100 million and grossing less than $20 million in America, this Waterworld on dry land has gone down as one of Hollywood's biggest flops. It's a slightly barmy allegory about the need for communication, in which Costner drifts across a post-apocalypse America claiming to be a postman with 15-year-old mail. As director, Costner ensures that every shot shows him in a flattering light, even when mouthing unintentionally hilarious dialogue.

    Oh my....

Isn't it strange.. Of the negative reviews of this movie, 100% didn't really say *what* was bad, and the most detailed wasn't sureif it was Wild West or Science Fiction. A suggestion to such reviewers of this, or any other movie. PAY ATTENTION!

It's based on a sci-fi novella written in the '60's as I recall, though I've forgotten the author. The postman starts as a conman, trying to survive in the traditional post-apocalyptic world of isolated, wary communities. Of course, he ends up as a hero and a unifying cause: there are no great plot suprises once the movie gas got into it's groove.

But the movie still manages to be a classic. Costner is good, the filming and locations are great, and the villain works as a foil for the hero.

I rated this as five stars instead of four because it's that little bit different. The world is accidentally saved by a conman who talks his way into trouble then redemption in exchange for a bag of food.

At a whisker over two-and-a-half hours, it isn't short: but that's how long it takes to tell the story, so that's how long it is. Truth is, I can't tell you if you'll enjoy this movie or not : but what I *can* say is that it'll play fair, and give you every chance to love it.

If there is nothing else going for this film, it's shorter than "Dances with Wolves" and far less silly than "Waterworld". It's also based on a better premise (the world ending with a whimper rather than a bang) and the sets are better than the average rebuilt-after-the-end-of-the-wor ld-from-scraps film. Strong cast give much needed support to Mr Costner, including a Shakesperian actor who is tragically killed off way too early in the film! <p> All in all, not as bad as it's been painted by critics and others. To get the best from the film, be sure and watch all the way to the end and play "spot the Costner" in the credits!
