Best film of 2006
By BH101 (35 reviews) from Cambridge , 28 Feb 2007[Highly rated reviewer]
Best film I saw all last year, and for me, far better and more enjoyable than some other films which attracted more acclaim (I'm looking at you, Babel). Nolan on the absolute top of his game.
Bale and Jackman are superb, the story is riveting, and aside from a slightly wobbly accent from Scarlett Johansson, everything about it is of the highest quality. Very different from the Illusionist, which is simpler, more linear, and less ambitious in scope- The Prestige is a complex, rich, intriguing film about life, love, art, obsession and deception. Michael Caine lends excellent support, and I personally really enjoyed Bowie's cameo as the eccentric Serb-American inventor Tesla.
Read the book on the strength of seeing the film, and while enjoyable in its own right, it only served to emphasize just what a superb job was done of adapting the screenplay. All the changes worked for the better, while retaining the heart of darkness that gives this film such a chilling atmosphere.
See it. It's the sort of film it's difficult to watch without then wanting to spend hours talking about.- Was this review helpful to you?

Utterly dazed and confused.
By georgeshaw (2 reviews) , 21 Apr 2013The Prestige. More like the Pres-WHAAAT?! This film will leave you utterly dazed and confuzzled. You shall be taken down a road. Much like the one Paul, John, George and Ringo talked of, it will be long and winding. Christopher Nolan is in control in this piece. And he will take you on a journey in which he sits firmly in the driver's seat. You, the passenger, will go where he, the driver, takes you. A journey of intrigue, puzzlement and wonders, Bale and Jackman showcase, what is quite simply, an array of stunning magic tricks. And this is the first tool in Nolan's Mary Poppins-esque bag of mystery. Unfortunately, some of these tools come flying out of the mystery bag, which Nolan has little control over. For one, the wide range of accents, some quite disappointing indeed (yes, I am looking at you, Miss. Johansson), but with the cameo of David Bowie himself, you, the passenger, can see beyond such failings. To cut a rather unusual review short, The Prestige is an anomaly amongst Bale greats. In the previous year, teaming up with Nolan (oh, and of course, Caine), Batman took to our screen to dish out a justice upon Gotham City; and in the same year (as The Prestige), Bale's acting talent shines through in the award-winning Rescue Dawn; and with two equally-stunning Batman films to follow, The Prestige simply isn't in the same league. It's much like asking Peter Kay to race Usain Bolt in the 100m - it would be enjoyable to watch Kay attempt to run, but he simply can't compete with Bolt.- Was this review helpful to you?
