Teen actress Anne Hathaway gives an endearing performance in Garry Marshall's delightful Disney comedy, THE PRINCESS DIARIES. Assisted by such seasoned pros as Julie Andrews and Hector Elizondo (a Marshall regular), Hathaway shines here in her first major film role. She plays Mia, a high school misfit who has resigned herself to social invisibility. Mia and her best friend, Lilly (Heather Matarazzo), are outcasts. While Lilly relishes the role, Mia just wishes a cute popular boy she likes, Josh (Erik von Detten), would notice her. Mia's life changes dramatically when her grandmother (Andrews) contacts her and Mia finds out she is heir to the throne of Genovia, a small European country between France and Spain. The klutzy, socially awkward girl doesn't think she's up to the job, but she agrees to be coached in regal manners by her grandmother before deciding if she wants to become a princess. Marshall (PRETTY WOMAN) is clearly in his element directing this light, charming teen comedy. Andrews, perfectly cast as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, makes her character seem both imperious and caring. Hathaway's performance and the presence of teen pop star Mandy Moore assure that young girls, in particular, will enjoy the film.

"THE PRINCESS DIARIES places three-dimensional human beings in a fairy-tale plot in a most beguiling fashion and teams a radiant Julie Andrews with appealing screen newcomer Anne Hathaway..."
"...The film is well cast. Ms. Hathaway is royalty in the making, a young comic talent with a scramble of features....The camera is mad about her..."
this film is superb. the princess diaries is a charming, modern day fairy tale with a positive message under the lighthearted surface.
Anne Hathaway's portrayal of Mia is excellent, with terrific timing and delivery, in her comic scenes, and with a touching subtlety in her dramatic moments.
Julie Andrews is wonderful, perfectly cast as the majestic queen, with an undercurrent of affection and vulnerability, beneath her regal exterior.
the story starts with, a socially awkward, but very bright 15-year-old girl called Mia, being raised by her single mum.
Mia discovers that she is, actually the princess of a small European country, when she finds out about, the recent death of her long-absent father, who, unknown to her, was the crown prince of Genovia.
She must make a choice between continuing the life of a San Francisco teen, or stepping up to the throne.
While Mia makes up her mind, she is pressed into taking princess lessons from her grandmother.
eventually she blossoms into a confident, radiant girl, despite the worries and pressure, that her newfound status brings.
Anne Hathaway is a charismatic, appealing role model with a sharp sense of comic timing, and Julie Andrews is at her regal best, whether teaching Mia the proper royal wave, or learning how to eat a corndog.
Mia learns not just how to be a princess but to have confidence in who she is.
this is not to say, that there are not some bumps along the way, with mean girls, boy problems, and other problems , that all teenagers face, but in Mia's case, through the camera lens of the paparazzi.
In the end, it all works out and she gets the right boy, who 'saw her when she was invisible' and sees her for the person she truly is.
one of the members of the cast, who is a show stealer, is Hector Elizondo who plays Joe, the Chief of Security, who has a real dry wit.
this is a nice gentle comedy, suitable for all the family.
This film is basically for the people who are wanting a relaxing, light, and little brain energy required film - its a simple storyline but nevertheless engages and enchants its viewers through light hearted comedy - its a story about a normal teenage girl who finds out that her father was the king of Genovia - as the only rightful heir to the thrown and to save the crown from falling into the wrong hands - Mia must learn how to look, dress, behave and overcome her fear of speaking out in public before the big announcement infront of all Genovians and Americans - With the help of her grand mother and current queen will Mia have what it takes to rule a country! - This film is truely one of those feel good movies which involves highs and lows, hits and misses which keeps you interested and hungry for more!
