superb family film

this film is superb. the princess diaries is a charming, modern day fairy tale with a positive message under the lighthearted surface.
Anne Hathaway's portrayal of Mia is excellent, with terrific timing and delivery, in her comic scenes, and with a touching subtlety in her dramatic moments.
Julie Andrews is wonderful, perfectly cast as the majestic queen, with an undercurrent of affection and vulnerability, beneath her regal exterior.
the story starts with, a socially awkward, but very bright 15-year-old girl called Mia, being raised by her single mum.
Mia discovers that she is, actually the princess of a small European country, when she finds out about, the recent death of her long-absent father, who, unknown to her, was the crown prince of Genovia.
She must make a choice between continuing the life of a San Francisco teen, or stepping up to the throne.
While Mia makes up her mind, she is pressed into taking princess lessons from her grandmother.
eventually she blossoms into a confident, radiant girl, despite the worries and pressure, that her newfound status brings.
Anne Hathaway is a charismatic, appealing role model with a sharp sense of comic timing, and Julie Andrews is at her regal best, whether teaching Mia the proper royal wave, or learning how to eat a corndog.
Mia learns not just how to be a princess but to have confidence in who she is.
this is not to say, that there are not some bumps along the way, with mean girls, boy problems, and other problems , that all teenagers face, but in Mia's case, through the camera lens of the paparazzi.
In the end, it all works out and she gets the right boy, who 'saw her when she was invisible' and sees her for the person she truly is.
one of the members of the cast, who is a show stealer, is Hector Elizondo who plays Joe, the Chief of Security, who has a real dry wit.

Not too bad actually
