I wanted to see how a novel written in the 1600s stood up to the rigours of being made into a modern-day film.
It is a great success, due in the main to a very good and experienced director in Bertrand Tavernier and to a lovely performance from the beautiful Melanie Thierry, who I am ashamed to say I did not know before viewing this excellent film. She is an actress to watch for the future.
The background of the Huguenot v Catholics in mid 17 century France adds a good starting point. And the 'backcloth' to any period work is so important.
Having accomplished that,it provides striking photography and wonderful sets that bring a 'sense' of being in 17th century France.
The film then goes on to tell its story.......which I will not repeat the synopsis of here. But suffice it to say that it is a story worth following, Romance, passion,intrigue, period melodrama.....they are all here in abundance.
I hope this thoughful and beautifully crafted film does well at the box-office and on DVD. It deserves it.

A total bore

Worth a watch
