Priest-turned-cop Elias Koteas gets caught up in an earthly battle between renegade angels Christopher Walken and Eric Stoltz in this strangely ambiguous and slightly pretentious horror fantasy from writer/director Gregory Widen, who also co-scripted Highlander. The wildly imaginative premise and poetic development, along with a solid cast that includes Virginia Madsen and Amanda Plummer, make this often compelling, sometimes corny, chiller a bizarre cult item. It's highly ambitious on the cerebral front but, except for one scene in Hell, lacking the sort of special effects you would expect from such an apocalyptic notion. However, despite its flaws, it was successful enough to spawn two sequels.
Bizarre low-budget chase thriller that is enjoyable in an over-the-top way; it's helpful to discover that bad angels wear black leather trousers.
A priest who has his faith shattered at the steps of an altar, leaves the church to pursue a career in the police force. When a bizarre murder and a Bible containing untold passages become his responsibility, he is drawn into a war of the heavens. Angels have come to earth in hope of recruiting an evil soul to lead them against other Angels, and end the stalemate. A race against time begins, to claim the soul of a dead general, and end the war
The storyline is well thought out, and the acting is also of a very high standard. Sadly, there are no extras on the disc or interviews, which would have been a nice touch. However, the film does grab your attention, and keep you in suspense. The religious theme may not be to everyones taste, but its a fine film nonetheless.
This film was good, but couldn't help thinking there could have been more, still with Christopher Walken in it, it wasn't all that bad. I didn't regret hiring this one, but just felt they could have done more with what was a pretty good plot idea. So overall it was average.
