Hammer's film of Nigel Kneale's ground-breaking television serial was a huge success, encouraging the studio to concentrate on the production of horror films; in that regard, it can truly be said to have changed the course of British film history. The story, of an astronaut who returns to Earth only to gradually mutate into a vegetable, was subsequently much emulated. Veteran director Val Guest detested the casting of American actor Brian Donlevy, though his portrayal of Quatermass was generally well-received at the time; while Jack Warner, PC George Dixon in The Blue Lamp and the long-running TV series Dixon of Dock Green, plays the inspector who helps the professor destroy the terror from outer space.

Intelligent science fiction based on a highly successful BBC TV serial; the film version is generally workmanlike despite its obvious low budget.

    Classic 50s B&W sci-fi/horror movie.

This is the Hammer movie version, rather than the BBC TV series, which I don?t believe exists anymore. It?s been reduced to half the length of the original and apparently features a completely different cast. Apart from the dodgy science and special effects (isn?t this the whole point of watching a movie like this?), there?s some great acting and suspense. The plot is fairly predictable, but only because it?s so old and heavily copied, but it keeps to the point, the story is always moving forwards and it?s certainly thought provoking. If you like old B&W sci-fi movies, this is definitely one of the better ones.

    Good old fashioned 'comedy' horror

This one is suitable for all ages.

Fairly interesting and predictable all the way through. Bear in mind that this film was made way back in 1955, what will people be saying about Matrix Revolutions in 50 years time? (I wonder).
