We are not amused
By GreenwichPaul (49 reviews) from London , 03 Apr 2007[Highly rated reviewer]
Mirren's performance is certainly the 'crowning' (sorry!) glory in a somewhat lacklustre film. The week that the film looks at was certainly a very interesting time in the UK's history and the film tries to explore the shifting attitude of the public and media and hits on some interesting points. The problem with the film is that many of the characters seem too thinly sketched (Prince Philip in particular seems to have wandered in from a satirical sketch show) and there is little insight into the characters. Ultimately it is Mirrens performance which raises above Frears' surprisingly pedestrian direction and gives the film its heart and soul- Was this review helpful to you?

(707)Agreed with the critics generally
By a customer , 16 Dec 2012The film was as had been expected. Although I thought Tony Blair was painted in rather too large a positive light. A strange set of circumstances being the baseline was always going to lead to odd portrayals.- Was this review helpful to you?

an interesting insight!
By Sab76 (75 reviews) from Birmingham , 16 Sep 2012I found this film very interesting. An insight into how the royal family live maybe?! I think the sensitive subject matter was delivered fairly and delicately. Hard to believe its been fifteen years.- Was this review helpful to you?

Very good
By a customer , 14 Jul 2012A great performance from Helen Mirren. I really enjoyed this, a very sad touching story brings it all back. I was however disappointed with the ending, that could have been much better.- Was this review helpful to you?

Cliche upon cliche
By TheMorrisMan (2 reviews) , 11 Jul 2012I was rather looking forward to this after all the hype. Alas I was bitterly disappointed. It was undoubtedly written for an American audience and piled cliché upon cliché... The Queen Mother drinking gin at all hours, Prince Philip picking up a shotgun at the slightest provocation, The Queen bonding with a persecuted Stag (please!), Prince Charles handwringing and scheming. What tosh.
Here was an opportunity to explore what was really going on within the Royal Court and reveal the complex relationship between the Queen and the Prime Minister. The problem with that is that no-one really knows what went on and so they resorted to cliché and then laid it on thick.
Mirren was good. Sheen was mesmerising. But then he always is.- Was this review helpful to you?

The Queen Elizabeth we know projected back into the palace
By prach (11 reviews) , 26 Apr 2012In this film Queen Elizabeth is Queen Elizabeth as we see her in public, projected back into the palace, with added display of self-reflection and suppressed expressions of her emotions. She is portrayed as being little more than an embodiment of the institution she occupies - anarchronistic, rigid, controlled, redundant, but still taking false pride in its tradition and having the illusion that it has free will.- Was this review helpful to you?
