A scientist awakes one morning only to realise he may be the only person left alive on Earth after an experiment goes wrong. It's an intriguing if not altogether original concept. The World, the Flesh and the Devil and Charlton Heston's cult The Omega Man were there first. Bruno Lawrence gives a beguiling central performance as someone who is suddenly able to live out his fantasies, to enjoy the empty city without guilt or interference. Shot against stunning Auckland backdrops by Geoff Murphy, the acclaimed New Zealand director of the Maori historical drama Utu, the early section develops a strong sense of mystery, but after Lawrence discovers two other survivors, one male, one female, the script follows an all too predictable path.

    A good find

I first saw this film on the TV about 8 or 9 years ago. I wasn't intending to watch it all, but the premise and storyline kept me hooked right until the end.

The film starts with a man waking up and finding himself alone - everyone else has disappeared. It then follows his attempts to understand what has happened, and why he has not disappeared.

I won't say too much as I don't want to spoil anything, but I found it to be both interesting, exciting and intruiging. The performances are good, and the ending was excellent!

It's not the most high-budget of films, but I found it to be a good find!

    The Quiet Earth

I have often dreamt of how nice it would be to wake up one morning to have the whole world to myself - call it the stress of society if you like. This film excellently depicts such a thing happening. I would say that this film is brilliant just for the concept and the first part of the film alone. It does start to die a bit later on, but it can still be forgiven for this because of the excellent begging.
