What a revelation this was. With the current taste for ever more spectacular special effects and bucketloads of gore in our film industry, it was a joy to sit down and watch this beautiful gentle film. Yes I know there are already two filmed versions of this story, but if there was ever a case for a remake then this production certainly proves it. The basis is a wonderful story, guaranteed to tug at the heartstrings of even the most cynical of us but the main contribution comes from the cast. What a line up! The cast and screen play of the original version proved to be a landmark in British film production
This version (which includes a major member of the original film) comes nowhere near the original - and to my mind the far better version.
Having said that the setting and photography saves the day.
