So-so horror from Hollywood's golden age
By a customer from Chelmsford , 22 Feb 2008[Highly rated reviewer]
The Raven is the second of the three Universal horror films of the '30s to pair up their two key stars, Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi (The Black Cat and The Invisible Ray where the others) and develop new stories outside the classic monsters of Dracula, Frankenstein and the Mummy. Compared to such films, this is a disappointment, lacking the gothic charms of the former, having a modern setting in its tale of a evil doctor(Lugosi) who alters the appearance of a wanted killer (Karloff) in return for his services in winning a beautiful young patient Lugosi has fallen in love with. The direction is dull, never really bringing the film alive and the script relies on haunted house cliches such as secret passageways and hands lurching out of the dark. One for Universal Horror completists.- Was this review helpful to you?

The Raven
By gothic (84 reviews) from Craigavon , 29 Sep 2008A real masterpiece, Karloff and Lugosi on top form. Karloff tops the credits and as usual outshines Lugosi in the acting stakes. But Bella really steals the show as the crazy physician, his maniacal laughter will live with me for years. The style and atmoshere of this Universal classic is a joy to watch. Would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys this genre.- Was this review helpful to you?
